Public Workshops

Open Books / Day of the Dead

In collaboration with Open Books, storytellers and musicians brought in live music and live reading for participants during the National Museum of Mexican Art’s Day of the Dead celebration. Guests could sit and listen to Day of the Dead themed music and storytelling of books describing Mexico’s history of Dia De Los Muertos. Guests could then create their own sugar skull using clay and other material.

Dia Del Niño

Guest artist Joseph Josue Mora was invited to teach flash sketchbooks for the National Museum of Mexican Art’s Dia Del Niño, an annual celebration for children in the community. Mora brought step by step process of creating a small sketchbook through stapling, cutting and rounding edges of the sketchbook. Young artists could then write and decorate their creation.

Printing Patterns Workshop

Participants were asked to look at patterns they see daily. Through observing such repeats and rhythms, they created block prints for their own clothes and garments. Participants learned how to relief block print through carving into linoleum blocks, and created patters using ink and fabric. Artists created their own motifs and images that best described their own artist interpretation.
