Little Village High School: Arboles De La Vida

In collaboration with Elevarte at LVHS, mothers of students were welcomed to participate in an Arbol de la Vida 4-week intensive workshop with teaching artists Sarita Garcia and Sarita Hernandez. The mothers of LVHS learned about the history of Arboles de la Vida in the Mexican Artesáno community, along with contemporary artists and artistans who are still creating this art form. The mothers were given prompts to think about what symbols and images would best describe their family through thinking about foods, traditions, and clothing. They began creating through sketching, forming the armature with news paper, paper machéd with a sugar and flour mixture, sculpted their symbols and later added detail through paint and their own devices. The Mothers of LVHS students would end the workshop with their own Arbol de la Vida that represents their identity, family and history.
